grep -i "exception" /var/log/syslog doesn't output anything.

Please, try these two also:
grep -ri "exception" /var/log
find /var/log -name "*.gz" -print -exec zgrep "exception" \{\} \;

I couldn't reproduce the error on the 3.5.1 version.

Could you please specify your current version?

If you have already 3.5.1, your log content like:
grep -i "exception" /var/log/syslog

will be necessary.
