No problem after lots of trial and error and some google help I managed to come up with a way to get it to work.
Transfer from physical machine to VM using vmware converter and selecting "do not reconfigure OS"
Boot the newly created VM with a debian ISO and select reinstall grub boot loader to /dev/sda
go to shell and mount /dev/sda1 as root.
run blkid and note the new block IDs for the drive partitions.
Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg with the new IDs.
Not sure if this is the best way? but it worked for me.. SPCE 2.6.
